Brown leaf tips no matter what you try? Brown edges on leaves? Yellowing, wilting and leaf drop? Chlorine could be slowly killing your plants...

Chlorine is hard to get away from if you're a plant. As such a tiny amount of chlorine is necessary for plants, an excess is far more likely than a deficiency. That's because chlorine is almost everywhere. In the form of chlorides in their soil, in fertiliser, and especially in tap water. Protect your plants with Plant Water Drops, the instant solution to make tap water safe for your plants by removing chlorine.

💀 Chlorine: The sneaky plant killer

Chlorine can be sneaky. Yes, chlorine can cause immediate harm to plants if chlorine levels are high, or a plant is sensitive to chlorine (check the plant list below). But for other plants, chlorine can sneak up on you slowly.

Chlorine and chloride can slowly build up in soil, extra added every time you fertilise, even more added every time you use tap water. By the time you eventually see the symptoms, you'd be forgiven for thinking it can't be from your water, since you've been using tap water all this time without any problems. Until now.

You can't do much to control what's naturally in your plant's substrate (plus remember plants do need tiny amounts), but you can avoid chlorine getting to toxic levels by choosing a chlorine-free fertiliser, and if collecting rainwater or bottled water isn't an option, you can now remove chlorine from your tap water instantly with Phytology Plant Water Drops.

🪴 Which plants are sensitive to chlorine?

Some of the more chlorine-sensitive indoor plants include:

Peace Lilies, Marantas, Calatheas, Stromanthes and other Prayer Plants, Orchids, Ferns, African Violets, Begonias, Spider Plants, Parlour Palms, Yucca, Carnivorous Plants such as Pinguicula, Snake Plants and other Dracaenas.

Although ALL indoor plants are sensitive to too much chlorine, these are some that can be harmed at lower levels that other plants might tolerate (at least until levels start to build-up).

What are the signs of chlorine toxicity in plants?

🍃 FOLIAGE

Look out for brown leaf tips, scorched leaves and brown leaf edges often with a yellow halo, older leaves turning yellow, wilting and leaf drop. Harder to diagnose is slow or stunted growth and a general failure to thrive. And that's just some of what you CAN see...

🪴 ROOTS

...but what you can't see is the harm excess chlorine and chloride causes to your plants delicate roots BEFORE the visible signs appear above-ground. Excess chlorine can damage roots cells, reduce uptake of essential nutrients and water, and even cause root death.

🌱SOIL

Even if your plant's roots and leaves don't suffer, their soil can. Chlorine not only disinfects our water by killing bacteria and fungi, it can do the same to beneficial bacteria and fungi in our plant's substrate soil.

Chlorine can kill the microorganisms that are essential for breaking down organic matter and turning it into nutrients for our plants, known as the 'soil web'. The good news is those good guys can rebound when you stop watering with chlorinated water.

💧 Instantly remove chlorine from tap water

3, 2, 1... Plant Water Drops instantly removes chlorine to make your water safe for your plants. And a little goes a looong way. Just 3 drops to 1 litre water is all it takes, so this 100ml bottle treats up to 333 litres! That's just 3 cents per litre (fertiliser averages around 7 to 18 cents per litre).

And yes, you CAN add fertiliser to the same water. Remove the chlorine first, add your fertiliser (no wait time required in-between), and you're ready to water immediately.

PS: Even if you're a heavy waterer like I am, with one medium plant getting around half a litre each time I water, this little 100ml bottle will water over 660 plants!

🫗 Fertiliser-friendly

Unlike some chlorine removers (made for fish), Plant Water Drops are fertiliser friendly. Plant Water Drops remove chlorine without removing the minerals from your fertiliser. Now you can take out the chlorine and add your fertiliser all in the same water and just get on with giving your plants only what they need, and nothing they don't.

🧪 Do chlorine-free fertilisers exist?

If your fertiliser lists all the ingredients on the label (a lot don't), then you might see chlorine on the list. Remember it is essential in tiny amounts. Common substrate ingredients like soil and bark also provide chlorine to plants in the form of chlorides.

If you want to reduce the sources of chlorine, as well as treating your tap water, you can switch to a chlorine-free and chloride-free fertiliser like the GT Focus range.

💧Are there other ways to get chlorine out of tap water?

WATER FILTERS > Other than using rainwater or bottled water, some water filter brands like Brita are one option for removing chlorine from your tap water for your plants. If you don't mind the wait and cost.

A Brita cartridge can filter one litre of water in about 15 minutes. Depending on the brand and model, a filter cartridge costs about $10 and filters around 150 litres at a cost of around 6 cents per litre, needing replacing about once a month.

Compared that to Phytology Plant Water Drops where a 100ml bottle treats over 330 litres, removes chlorine instantly with no wait and costs around 3 cents per litre

GAS OFF > Another way to remove chlorine from tap water is to leave open containers out and wait for the chlorine to 'gas off' into the air. It takes around 2 to 5 days depending on your chlorine levels. If you get some chlorine test strips you can test daily until chlorine levels read 0 to know how long you need to wait for your water supply.

Leaving the containers outside in direct sunlight speeds up the gassing off process to around 24 hours instead, as the sun helps chlorine gas evaporate faster.

Phytology Plant Water Drops works instantly with no risk of contaminants getting into open water containers while you wait.

🐟 Can I use fish tank chlorine remover instead?

In theory yes, but in reality it's not recommended. Both remove chlorine but aquarium water conditioner products can also remove other minerals that are harmful to fish but essential to land plants.

Using fish tank chlorine remover may strip essential minerals from plant fertiliser added to the water and may also react with fertiliser. It would be best to fertilise separately if using fish tank chlorine remover for indoor plants. Plant Water Drops remove chlorine from tap water without stripping other minerals, making it fertiliser-friendly.

It's also better for fish health to use chlorine remover made for and tested as safe for fish. Using Plant Water Drops for fish is not recommended.
