The Rare Plantation is a boutique NZ grower who specialises in (you guessed it), growing rare plants, including everyone's favourites, aroids. Aroids cover a BIG group of some of the most popular houseplants of all time. This blend combines 8 separate beneficial ingredients into one chunky, fibrous, soil-free blend for aroids. This is the 5 litre size.
PS: Need lots of potting mix? Orders over 15 litres total sometimes get too big or heavy for standard shipping rates. If your order goes over into overweight / oversize rates I will be in touch to let you know. I won't incur any costs without your okay - Anna
Which plants is this mix for?
Although made for all aroids, this blend is well-suited for epiphytic aroids in particular (ones that grow up trees in nature), such as Monstera, Philodendron, Anthurium, Pothos, Epipremnum and more. It emulates the fibrous, woody trunks and branches aroids would attach their roots to, and get nutrients from, in their natural habitat.
Although they vary in appearance, sometimes quite dramatically, most aroids share the same preference for a chunky, free-draining substrate with plenty of air pockets for their roots which helps to avoid waterlogged soil and reduce the risk of root rot. The exact properties of this Chunky Aroid Blend from The Rare Plantation.
What makes this mix different?
Typical aroid mixes are usually medium to chunky when it comes to the size of their ingredients, but chunky + fibrous is one reason this mix is different. Roots love fibrous mixes.
Being based on coco chips, instead of only or mainly bark, means this mix holds a little more moisture than typical bark-based aroid mixes, but without sacrificing plenty of air.
It still offers medium to low moisture retention to keep the risk of root rot down, but if you find typical aroid mixes dry out too fast at your place and you're constantly watering, try this blend instead.
PS: For the fans of the Wildvine Aroid and Hoya Blend looking for a replacemen now Wildvine has closed, this mix shares similar properties to Wildvine's Aroid and Hoya Blend :)
What's in this mix?
COCO CHIPS
Sourced from coconut husks, coco chips hold a good amount of moisture balanced with creating pocket of air for roots. A more fibrous, higher-water-retentive alternative to bark chips.
COCO PEAT
Fine, fibrous, light and fluffy with high water retention. Increases water retention, similar to soil, but doesn't compact to the level soil does, leaving space for air.
BARK CHIPS
A popular base for aroid mixes to improve drainage and help prevent root rot and other watering-related problems.
VERMICULITE
Like little sponges! Vermiculite holds a lot of water in reserve for roots.
PUMICE
Best friend for over-waterers. Increases drainage and adds air.
BIOCHAR
Activated horticultural charcoal which holds onto nutrients for plants, helps balance pH, and helps create an environment that supports beneficial bacteria and microbes for healthier, more fertile soil.
WORM CASTINGS
Worm pooh! Also known as vermicast or vermicompost. Worm castings are super nutritious, hold moisture well and are also known to help deter pests naturally.
What's NOT in this mix
No soil and no fertiliser here. No soil helps avoids higher water retention, compaction and reduced air space for roots. No fertiliser means you're in control of what your plant get and when.
